Tips On
Clothing Style And Accessories
-
Very simple garments
always photograph best. The goal is to put the focus on the person
and not directly to the clothing.
-
-
Medium to dark tones of
brown, gray, burgundy, green or blue are pleasing choices when photographed
against a medium or dark colored background.
-
-
Because darker clothing is
slimming it often is a good choice for close-up, full-length or three-quarter
length portraits in which a medium to dark background is used.
-
-
Turtle necks or V-necks
are flattering, provided that neither is exaggerated in style. Avoid very wide
or particularly deep V-neck garments as well as bulky cowl neck sweaters that
completely hide the neck.

As a group, choose
clothing in the same tonal ranges so that no single member of the family or
group stands out because the clothing is too light or bright as compared to
the rest of the group. You can get as close as you can, and then I
can change the colors to match digitally if necessary. For adults, soft subtle
colors of medium to dark tones are best. Earthy colors such as tans, browns,
rusts, deep oranges, reds, or greens can be very flattering. Soft blues can
also be pleasing, for example, long sleeve denim shirts. Sometimes it is
possible to create a mood with light or pastel colors. It is best to stay away
from loud plaids or stripes; but small prints photograph well. The bolder the
pattern the more it draws attention away from you in the portrait. We strongly
suggest wearing three-quarter length or long sleeves (the camera lenses add
weight to the arms). Try to avoid large areas of white, hot colors and
especially sleeveless tops. Fair skinned, light haired individuals should
avoid pastels, as they will make you look washed out. Bring complete outfits
including the shoes, as some of poses may be full length.

For children over 5 years
of age the colors previously mentioned are also recommended. Often informal
clothing is more comfortable for their session. Clothing that does not have to
be adjusted or tucked in is best. Please make such outfits fit properly. Some
suggestions for boys are khaki pants or a nice pair of jeans with denim
shirts, boat shoes or bucks, or cords with a turtleneck and sweater. For
girls, dresses with small prints, tights or ankle socks and matching shoes.
Overalls, denims and denim shirts, nice pant or skirts with turtle necks and
sweaters look great.

For infants soft
comfortable clothes that will not bunch up are best. Colors can be light but
not bright. Bare legs, even bare feet are cute for babies. Stuffed animals
that are special to you or the infant are very good to bring.

Men, shave just prior to
your portrait session because there is no way to remove the "Five-O'Clock
Shadow." Avoid "nicking" your face.

Make-up is recommended, bring some along for additional
touch-ups. Curling irons, hair spray, brushes, spritzers, etc.
